BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC)- Alabama Supreme Court Justice Mike Bolin has withdrawn from his position as the new Jefferson County Attorney.

The move comes one week after he was approved by the commission. According to early reports, Bolin will stay on with the state supreme court.

Former county attorney Jeff Sewell involuntarily retired after disagreements with some county commissioners.

Not all of the five member county commission backed Bolin. All Republican commissioners, David Carrington, Jimmie Stephens and Joe Knight, supported fellow Republican Bolin. The two Democrats, Commissioners George Bowman and Sandra Little Brown, voted against the nomination.

Ala. follows up Best BBQ Bracket contest with Sauce-Off competition

MONTGOMERY, AL - Community leaders in four Alabama cities will sample local barbecue sauces and send regional winners to the "BBQ Sauce-Off" championship on May 18 in Birmingham.

The regional competitions will begin May 4 in downtown Montgomery at the Southern Makers Festival and in Mobile at the Market on the Square.  The following Saturday competitions will be held in Decatur at the Decatur/Morgan County Farmers Market and in Tuscaloosa at the Tuscaloosa River Market.

Alabama Tourism Department's Brian Jones said the Sauce-Off is a follow up to the popular BBQ Bracket contest on Facebook that state tourism did last month. "We had more than 81,000 votes cast on our Alabama Food Facebook page with Jim ‘N Nick's ending up as our state winner. The BBQ Bracket was like a hit movie and the Sauce-Off is our sequel," Jones said.

FDA warns of dangers with temporary tattoos

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC)- Temporary tattoos may be more than cool or cute. In a special "On Your Side" report, Ronda Robinson explains why the FDA says temporary tattoos can cause permanent damage.

"My first tattoo came when i was 19." You could say body art has become a form of expression for Jennifer Poole. She didn't stop there. She got a teddy bear tattoo, two lady bugs, a butterfly and a cross wrapped with a pink ribbon.

"We thought I had breast cancer. We spent a week not knowing so it changed my perspective. It gave me a new found respect for women who do suffer from breast cancer." She said.

On her leg, Poole displays a wolf howling at the moon that was supposed to be a temporary tattoo.

"I don't like the temporary tattoos at all. After they are on can't get them off. it irritates skin, left welts."

MAX asks JeffCo cities to cover system upgrades

Source: WBRC video

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC)- Residents who live in an area served by MAX buses may soon have to pay for the service - even if they don't ride.

The Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority (BJCTA) approved a new budget Monday that includes $606,000 worth technoligical upgrades.

The MAX system has 37 new, state of the art buses that were paid for out of the capital budget, according to Director Ann Dawson-August. However, the authority has computers that are seven to 10 years old and can't keep up with the technology on the new buses.

To pay for the upgrades and to fill the $606,000 hole, Dawson-August says all cities served by MAX will have to pitch in. Cities pay for the service based on residents' usage and MAX also relies on a tax, which fluctuates each year.
