Chili cook-off Saturday in support of The Exceptional Foundation

Chili cook-off Saturday in support of The Exceptional Foundation

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -  If you love chili, get excited— The Exceptional Foundation’s ninth annual Chili Cook-Off is this weekend. Along with your taste buds being incredibly satisfied, ticket proceeds will go towards social and recreational activities for the foundation.

This Saturday, March 2, from 10:30 a.m. until 3 p.m., you’ll be able to try almost 100 different types of chili and see the city’s top chefs square off for the cook-off. This year it's moving locations and will be held in the parking lot of the Colonial Brookwood Village mall.

“This annual event has developed a loyal following across a diverse audience base because it is a fun, 'come as you are' outdoor party offering good food, live music and friendly competition," fundraiser originator Billy McGruder said in a statement released by the Exceptional Foundation

Birmingham woman turns 104 Thursday

Birmingham woman turns 104 Thursday

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC)- We all dream of having a long and healthy life, but living to 104? That’s something to celebrate!

On February 14, Ruth Farley will be doing just that. A member of the Palisades Church of Christ, Farley is surrounded by a wonderful community, who had a luncheon for her birthday on Tuesday February 12.

Farley still lives at home, attends church every Sunday, as well as a ladies’ Bible class on Tuesday mornings but says she has no secret to her long life.

"Just trying to live a good, clean life... I have no secrets in it. It just comes natural," says Farley.

Along with following nature's course, Farley enjoys her sweets and making them in her spare time. She is specifically known for her homemade caramel cakes which she bakes for potluck lunches and special occasions at church.

“If you’d like a piece, you better get to the front of the line! If you don’t, it will all be gone,” a handful of ladies at the luncheon said.
