Science teachers learn how to have fun through UAB program

Science teachers learn how to have fun through UAB program

Teachers often try to entice their students into different subject matters by touting how “Fun!” the lesson is. Rarely does it work.

However, 70 area science teachers are proving their points Wednesday and Thursday as part of the Alabama Hands on Activity Science Program where they will dig in the dirt, play with balls and handle bugs and other creatures.

The program run through UAB’s School of Education is designed to teach teachers how to engage their students using interactive lessons. Started in 1994 by the Alabama Commission on Higher Education, the program has reached more than 7,000 teachers across the state.

The Hollywood lights up tonight in Birmingham

The Hollywood lights up tonight in Birmingham

An area that was once an eyesore will be lit up Monday night after a multi-million dollar renovation project.

Mayor William Bell, along with members of the Birmingham City Council will celebrate the re-opening of a shopping center located at 404 Hollywood Blvd. with the lighting of The Hollywood—a new iconic Hollywood sign that is a vintage throwback to an earlier area.

The property, which links the city of Birmingham to Homewood and Mountain Brook, remained vacant for many years before real estate group Shannon Waltchack acquired the section of buildings. The renovated area will feature a bank, two restaurants and other retail establishments, according to Derek Waltchack, principal of the real estate group.

“We think this is an outstanding location for retail, within the Birmingham city limits and adjacent to Homewood and Mountain Brook,” Waltchack said in a release.
