Golf carts are illegal on public roadways
News

HOOVER, AL (WBRC)- Hoover Police officers are warning people who own golf carts and operate them illegally.

Police have noticed more people driving them places they're not allowed. Police officers have spotted people driving golf carts on public streets and sidewalks. That's against the law.

FOX6 went to the Ross Bridge neighborhood Wednesday where we saw two people driving them illegally on the street. Police want to warn people about this now before they start issuing citations.

The reason why the police department is making people aware of the law is because in 2010 there were several accidents involving golf carts. One person died.

Some folks in Ross Bridge say they didn't know it was illegal to drive them around their neighborhood, but they realize how dangerous golf carts can be if you're not careful behind the wheel.

Brittany Hammock said, "Because it's not a vehicle, it doesn't have doors, people can fall off of them."

Gary Clayton said, "You have to take precautions, do the right things and operate them in a manner they were designed to be operated or something serious can happen. You can hurt yourself or loved ones."

Hoover Police Department says The Preserve, Trace Crossings, and Scout Trace are some others neighborhoods where people are driving those golf carts illegally.

So consider this your warning. If you get a ticket, it could go against your driver's license and may affect your insurance rates.
