Ala. follows up Best BBQ Bracket contest with Sauce-Off competition

MONTGOMERY, AL - Community leaders in four Alabama cities will sample local barbecue sauces and send regional winners to the "BBQ Sauce-Off" championship on May 18 in Birmingham.

The regional competitions will begin May 4 in downtown Montgomery at the Southern Makers Festival and in Mobile at the Market on the Square. The following Saturday competitions will be held in Decatur at the Decatur/Morgan County Farmers Market and in Tuscaloosa at the Tuscaloosa River Market.

Alabama Tourism Department's Brian Jones said the Sauce-Off is a follow up to the popular BBQ Bracket contest on Facebook that state tourism did last month. "We had more than 81,000 votes cast on our Alabama Food Facebook page with Jim ‘N Nick's ending up as our state winner. The BBQ Bracket was like a hit movie and the Sauce-Off is our sequel," Jones said.

White chocolate mixed berry bread pudding

Chef Jared Danks, the program director for the Culinary Arts and Pastry Arts programs at Culinard in Birmingham, makes a white chocolate mixed berry bread pudding.

Ingredients

4 oz. berries

1 oz unsalter butter (melted)

12 oz white bread (day-old)

1 qt heavy cream

5 oz (3 ea) eggs

13 oz granulated sugar

1/2 fl oz vanilla extract

4 oz white chocolate

Directions

Use the portion of the butter to thoroughly coat a 2-inch (5 cm) deep hotel pan. Reserve the remaining butter.

Tear the bread into chunks and place in a large bowl. Pour the cream over the bread and set aside until soft.

Beat the eggs and sugar until smooth and thick. Add the vanilla, the remaining melted butter and the berries.

Alabama's favorite barbecue down to 2 restaurants

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The Alabama Tourism Department's contest for the favorite barbecue restaurant in the state is down to Jim 'N Nick's of Birmingham and Sam's BBQ of Montgomery.

The Facebook-based contest is patterned after March Madness and began with 32 restaurants. Jim 'N Nick's defeated Big Bob Gibson's of Decatur in the final four with a vote of 7,171 to 6,981. Sam's beat The Shed in Mobile 2,393 to 1,815.

The Tourism Department's Brian Jones said more than 75,000 votes have been cast in the online contest. The winner will be announced Monday. The winner will receive a trophy and be named "The Alabama BBQ Bracket Fan Favorite." The contest is part of the Tourism Department's Year of Alabama Food promotion.

Alabama's Best BBQ Bracket moves into Elite 8

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC)- If there's one thing the Best BBQ Bracket has proven so far, it's that Alabamians are passionate about their barbeque.

The state tourism department's March Madness-style bracket is pitting 32 barbeque joints from around the state against each other in a "quest for the best" barbecue in Bama.

Voting has moved into round three and the competition is fierce among the restaurants that have made it to the Elite Eight. The winners that will advance to the Final Four will be announced Saturday afternoon.

In central Alabama, Birmingham's Jim 'N Nicks is in a tight race against Tuscaloosa's original Dreamland barbeque. Just before noon, Jim N' Nicks had a slight lead of around 100 votes over Dreamland, but anything could change in the remaining hours of voting for this round.

Reservations ‘always recommended’ for Valentine’s Day

It's that time of year again. Cupid has taken aim and the arrows have hit their targets. All that's left is for us to show our loved ones just how much we care for them.

Valentine's card? Check.

Candy and balloons? Check.

Flowers and jewelry? Check.

Dinner reservations? ...Oops!

That last one may leave you having to get comfy on the couch later, which is "not the best way to start the year, obviously, with your loved one," according to Marco Morosini at the Silvertron Café.

Morosini advises customers to put some thought into that as well. Valentine's Day will be busy, as many couples head out on the town to enjoy a nice dinner together. But to make sure a table at your favorite place will be available, Morosini says, "Always recommend it, highly recommend it, strongly recommend it, a reservation."

"Hunger Hoedown" to benefit Community Kitchens of Birmingham

The Avondale Brewing Company is hosting a "Hunger Hoedown" Thursday evening to benefit hungry people in Birmingham. Proceeds from the event will go to the Community Kitchens of Birmingham, a nonprofit organization that serves around 96,000 meals each year to hungry people in Birmingham.

The Hunger Hoedown will take place from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Tickets at the door cost $25 and cover a meal of Saw's Soul Food and beverages. The band "Flying Jenny" will provide live music for the evening and door prizes will be given out during the night.

The Avondale Brewing Company is located at 201 41st Street South in Birmingham.
