Photo Gallery | New giraffe exhibit opens at Birmingham Zoo
Kids, Birmingham city officials and even our own Mickey Ferguson got an up-close-and-personal encounter today with the giraffes at a new exhibit in the Birmingham Zoo.
The Kiwanis Giraffe Encounter opened on Wednesday, April 25. The exhibit is recognized as one of the largest habitats for giraffes in the Southeast, according to the Zoo. The new exhibit offers visitors the chance to hand-feed the giraffes along a 4,000 square foot deck. The feeding area will be open to visitors on April 38. The cost to feed the giraffes is $3.
The Zoo currently has five reticulated giraffes, named Jalil, Willow, Edward, Keyara Jane and Zuri Anne.
"Jalil, a six year old male, is the leader of the herd. Willow, a female, is the next oldest giraffe at four years old. The second male, Edward, is three years old, and Keyara Jane and Zuri Anne are both two year old females. Jalil and Willow serve as the lead giraffes and train the others through guiding by example," a release from the Zoo states.
