Some of his surprise gifts included pictures from his 1936 Cross Country team at Mississippi State, a Letterman's blanket from MSU,a letter of thanks from his alma mater and a Mercedes Marathon medal.

Although he was a founding member of the Birmingham Track Club he says he never won a race AND never ran a marathon because he was "too smart" to run 26 miles.

With the Mercedes Marathon just a few weeks away, we felt it was only appropriate go to Wallace McRoy's 98th birthday party. Wallace was instrumental in starting the Birmingham Track Club and helping build the running community in this area.  

The funny thing is, Wallace has never run a marathon. In fact the longest he's ever run was seven miles. For his birthday present this year he got a marathon finishers medal anyway. As Fred put it, after 98 years he's run quite a marathon.
